fourth of july ideas {& summer eye candy}

I love planning menus for holidays and events. Unfortunately, July snuck up on me and I'm not prepared for the 4th by any means! This may be a good thing though, mainly because:
less cooking on Wednesday = more time spent hanging with the fam.
 I do have a couple of ideas though for those looking to make some yummy dishes.

July 4th is associated with two main foods;
ol'fashioned apple pie
some good bbq'n

and I would be lying if I said I didn't love both, especially on the 4th.
Usually my dad works the grill, so maybe I'll put some time aside on Tuesday
and make a homemade apple pie with a streusel topping.

Last year I made a festive trifle with red velvet cake, homemade whipped cream,
fresh raspberries, and fresh blueberries. It was light, sweet, and a perfect dessert for our
get-together.

This year, I might be making frozen daiquiris that I came across on Food Gawker. They
seem fairly easy and look really cute :)

My trifle and these daiquiris have one thing in common;
they both use berries for festive colors of red & blue. I love that!

In other news, yesterday when I was photographing the watermelon & feta salad, I heard
my neighbors mowing their lawn. I take the photos in front my kitchen
window, which looks out onto the side of their house. Since I usually stand on a chair to achieve
some of the shots I take, I couldn't help but think the entire time I was photographing that
my neighbor was going to walk pass the window and a see a girl in her over-sized pajamas, standing on a chair photographing food. I looked terrible & he would've been confused, so thankfully
that awkward encounter didn't  happen, for both of our sakes!

I also had an excruciating headache that was taking it's sweet (there was nothing sweet about this pain) time to go away, so when I was finished photographing and eating, I cozied up
back on the couch in hopes that I'd soon feel better. Oh, I probably should also tell you that our
lawn has grown exponentially over the last week due to the major amounts of rain we had.

My roommate, Lisa, came home a couple of hours later and mentioned to me that our lawn
looks good. I hadn't even stepped outside yesterday so in a state of confusion I quickly replied
"our lawn? I didn't mow any lawn today..."

And that's when I realized our neighbors must have mowed it for us! I thought that was
so nice of them!

Their dog has gotten out a few times and Lisa just so happened to have found him every time, so I think they were thanking us for that by mowing our lawn.

I, however, have never been the one to find their dog, so I feel like I need to do a little
something to thank them. I was thinking about baking them something and attaching
a recipe card that Eileen gifted me.

Ooey Gooey S'mores cookies perhaps? What do you guys think?

Lastly, I thought it would be fun to share with you all some of my favorite items
that I've had my eye on lately. They range from summer fav's to cookbooks & kitchen items.
I'm going to Manhattan in a couple of weeks in celebration of my birthday, and I've realized
that nothing in my closet appeals to me for this trip!
 "I have nothing to wear!!" (while staring into a closet full of clothes) is a phrase I've been saying all too often lately. It's a pretty common assumption that every girl has said that at least once.

Therefore I'm on the prowl for some new outfits to bring with me that are summer-chic.
Lately I've been obsessed with aqua's and orange's, as you'll probably notice.
